10 - 28 Sept | Theatre Republic - QUT Creative Industries Precinct
Welcome to Theatre Republic – a warm, wooded world of stained glass, unique art and secret stories.
Nestled among the hills of Kelvin Grove, just north of the CBD, the Republic brings you a record 17 adventurous theatre shows, in shapeshifting forms, all around a stunningly designed Festival hub.
The site is open Tuesday to Saturday during the Festival from 6pm each night – and earlier on Saturdays for matinees.
Our partners at La Boite Theatre Company and The Fresh Collective will be serving delicious food and running two fully licensed bars onsite so grab some food and a drink, enjoy some great live music and see at least two short shows every night – from the sweet pink riot of Joel Bray’s Daddy to the beautiful You & I by local circus luminaries Casus, or the wonderful reimagining of Orpheus and Eurydice coming to us from the UK.
Tucked around the site – in corners, down alleys, behind doors – are seven beautiful bespoke experiences for you to discover. You are invited to explore these places of celebration and creativity, reflection and play – and to use them to share your own stories.
So, come the springtime evenings this September, gather your friends for 15 nights of mind-blowing performance at Theatre Republic.
WRITE A letter to a lover
Write a letter to a lover – past, present, future or imagined. Your letters are anonymous and will find a home as part of the site at Theatre Republic. Submit your love letter via this form.
EXPERIENCE THE SITE
Tucked into the walls, alleyways and corners of Theatre Republic are seven activations, each one a different way to engage with the site, the Festival and with each other. These installations have been created by site designer Sarah Winter and resonate with concepts of community and shared stories that underscore the site and program as a whole.
The House of Common Hopes
Luggage tags and pencils sit on a shelf, brown string hangs like vines from the ceiling. Take a tag and pen a hope, wish, or dream for the future. Add it to the canopy of hopes by tying it to one of the hanging pieces of string.
Letter to a Lover
Submit an anonymous online letter to a lover – past, present and future. Letters you’ve written or received, ones you wished you’d written, or ones you once wrote but never sent. The letters will be displayed onsite, anonymously, for people to read.
The Book Exchange
Read a book, take a book, leave a book.
The Seed Library
A room full of dried native plants with a cupboard filled with vegetable and herb seeds, free to take, plant and share. Grow a piece of the Republic at home.
The Post Office
Write a letter and post it in the Republic’s post box and we will post it for you after the Festival. You can also leave a letter for a stranger at the Festival, or perhaps there’s one there already waiting for you to collect.
Library of Unspoken Truths and Convincing Lies
Push a button and receive a dubious truth or a beautiful lie.
There are four old, black bakelite phones hidden around the site - use them to call other people in the Republic and if you hear one ringing... answer it.
