Clem Jones City Hall Concerts
Brisbane Festival partners with Brisbane City Council to present three free special lunchtime concerts each Tuesday during Festival.
Tue 8 Sept, 12 noon
Mike Nock - Piano
Laurence Pike - Drums/Sampler
A rare performance from legendary pianist Mike Nock and multi-disciplinary drummer Laurence Pike (PVT, Triosk, Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders).
After a long history of music making together, the pair began improvising as a duo, culminating in the release of their critically acclaimed 2012 album Kindred and an appearance at the 2014 Melbourne International Jazz Festival.
The music is a dialogue between two unique voices and generations of Australian music. Using the unorthodox combination of piano and drum kit (augmented with electronics), the duo explores storytelling through improvisation, and the desire to seamlessly integrate the possibilities of technology with acoustic improvisation.
Mike and Laurence have recently returned from working with legendary engineer Jan Erik Kongshaug at Rainbow Studio in Oslo, Norway, where they have completed a new album to be released in late 2015.
Ethereal, inventive, humorous, and atmospheric: these are postcards from a shared journey between two distinct voices in Australian music.
"Conceived as music-making without a safety net... it's clear that Nock and Pike—separated by nearly 40 years—don't need one." (John Kelman - All About Jazz)

Simon Tedeschi is one of Australia’s best and most loved pianists. He has played in concert halls around the world, and has made acclaimed recordings of music by Grieg, Tchaikovsky and Mozart, as well as three solo albums - Gershwin and Me and Gershwin: Take Two, and Tender Earth - all making the top 5 in the ARIA Classical Charts. Simon also played the hands of acclaimed pianist David Helfgott for the Oscar-winning film Shine.
For this free lunchtime concert, Simon will play a brilliant Gershwin program, including ‘Rhapsody in Blue’, ‘Summertime’, ‘Lady Be Good’, ‘Love Walked In’ and many others.
"It's a brave Aussie pianist who ventures into quintessentially American territory... Yet, in the music here, Tedeschi joins the pantheon of these Gershwin gods." (The Australian)
