50/50 is a participatory performance class on Lindy Hop. Through conversations and demonstrations, audience members learn the basic footwork before the space becomes a dance hall for everyone to show their best swing moves.
Lindy Hop is a social dance that originated in Harlem, New York City in the 1930s. It is traditionally performed to Big Band Jazz music and is known for its acrobatic airsteps, where the partner is lifted off the ground.
Singapore artist Loo Zihan and his collaborators have been Lindy Hopping for more than a decade. 50/50 started with an exploration of their sexual and cultural identities in relation to this dance and the Lindy Hop community’s definition of authenticity. 50/50 is above all fun, but also challenges our preconceived notions of what, why and how we move.
No dance experience is required.

Loo Zihan is a performance and moving image artist based in Singapore. His work strives to reconcile the tension between the ‘flesh’ of the performing body and the ‘bone’ of the archive. He emphasises the labour and malleability of memory through various representational strategies that includes performance reenactments, essay films and data visualisations. His performance work has been presented at various events such as the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival in 2012 and 2015. His moving image work has been screened at various international film festivals like AFI Fest (Los Angeles) and Pusan International Film Festival (South Korea). He has participated in various artist residency programmes, most recently at the Victorian College of the Arts (Melbourne) hosted by Asialink Arts in 2015.
Sinclair Ang has been a leading figure in the Singaporean Lindy Hop and Swing Dance community for several years. In addition to teaching both adult and children’s classes regularly since 2001, he has also worked with special groups, including youths at risk, and the hearing impaired. He is known internationally as well, having taught at numerous workshops and camps across Europe, Australia, and Asia over the years.
Jereh Leong is actively involved in the contemporary dance scene in Singapore and wants to ignite emotions and imagination. He finds challenge in engaging himself in multidisciplinary works. Recent involvement with Singaporean theatre companies, TheatreWorks and The Necessary Stage brought about such performance opportunities. He has also performed at the Festival d’Hivernale Avignon (France), The Substation’s Septfest (Singapore) and his works performed at Esplanade’s Da:ns festival (Singapore) and the Artscience Museum Singapore.
