Brisbane Festival and Queensland Theatre Company present

St Mary’s in Exile

27 Aug - 25 Sep

Queensland Theatre Company (AUS)
World Premiere
By David Burton
In 2009, Brisbane’s Catholic community was rocked when the Catholic Church stepped in to oust beloved priest Father Peter Kennedy from his post at St Mary’s in South Brisbane.
He led more than 700 devoted parishioners, but higher powers scorned the statue of Buddha in the foyer and frowned when he blessed same-sex couples or let women into the pulpit.
On a stormy night, an excommunicated Father Peter is packing up to go into exile when a mysterious young homeless visitor walks out of the rain, wanting to know the story behind this unconventional holy man and what drove him to defy one of the world’s most powerful authorities.

Join us at Queensland Art Gallery for a performed excerpt from Queensland Theatre Company's upcoming production of St Mary’s in Exile, in association with Brisbane Festival.  This play reimagines the local events of 2009, which saw Father Peter Kennedy ousted from his post at St Mary’s Catholic Church in South Brisbane. Featuring a scene from the play, the Pop-up will also include a brief Q&A with the playwright, David Burton, and the man himself, Father Peter Kennedy. Directed by Jason Klarwein, St Mary’s in Exile plays at the QTC’s Bille Brown Studio from 27 August-25 September.

A voucher for 15% discount off the ticketed price will be available at the event.
