A New Garden by Clare McFadden

Something magical happens when Jim and Nell start a new garden

About the story

Another story inspired by pictures of nature, in particular the image of the rainbow that appeared in so many of the drawings. There was a particularly magic rainbow "Heart Hair Hot Air Balloon" and a “lovely mermaid friend” in a garden that helped us make this story. This tale also honours the themes of family – siblings and families were spending more time together at home and in the garden during the partial lockdown. Our sound designer loved creating sounds for baby vegetables with an Adventure Time vibe!

Throughout 2020 many people found new hobbies they never thought they would have guessed they liked until they were stuck at home with nothing else to do.

This is set in Brisbane, just on a normal street. It’s a picture of people getting outdoors, opening their windows..going for walks..random Brisbane-ers. Everyone is being active, being away from their screens where they have spent so much of their time these couple of months. I hope that is will be our future in Brisbane...yeah, cause we really haven’t recovered from COVID fully.

This is me and sister. When we had school at home, we finally got the training wheels off my bike and I learnt to ride All By Myself! We rode on the dead end of our street...it was so quiet there was no cars and our dog watched us play. I love him very much.

I missed the country side so much! In my imagination I'm there with my cat (my dearest companion) and my soccer ball day dreaming. In the sky, there are clouds shaped as butterflies and flowers.

During COVID-19 my family spent a lot of time together. I spent heaps of time with my sister. I taught a few new words and we climbed trees together. My family played board games and went outside more often. I love my sister no matter how cheeky she can be.

This picture is about a heart hair hot air balloon. It’s actually a parachute. You can use your heart parachute if you get in trouble or if you are falling out for a plane and it will catch you.

My wish for 2020 is that I can see my family that does not live in Queensland that I would sometimes get to see otherwise. This picture represents how 2020 has changed me.

#Wishful Bedtime Stories

Company Statement

2020 has been difficult for all of us and so developing Wishful Bedtime Stories this year was especially meaningful for the creative team. As artists, creating a work virtually, via emails and online meetings, posed new challenges—there was the danger of feeling isolated and disconnected. But initial concerns about being distanced from each other and our audience faded when we set eyes on the stories and art submitted by children in Brisbane. Here, in beautiful, colourful detail, was all of the uncertainty and fear, yet also the hope and humour, of the COVID experience. Receiving the work was inspiring, and we wanted to honour the children’s experiences of the pandemic in an authentic way.

Although the stories are somewhat universal, we also wanted them to settle inside the specificities of the Brisbane experience—with many of the most interesting ideas coming directly from the children’s stories and art. A big thank you to all the children who submitted work—we literally could not have done it without you!

We sincerely hope you enjoy these Wishful Bedtimes Stories. We dedicate them to all of the grandparent visits missed, the sport games cancelled, the hours of video games played, and all of the pets that were overjoyed to be by our side.
