Hannah Macklin
A joining of jazz, classical, prog, and spirituality.
Accomplished vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and Brisbane/Magandjin local Hannah Macklin explores themes of Dreaming, nature, regeneration, God, love, war and the cosmos in the work from her newest (unreleased) album.
Her respect for the simple yet sacred beauty of all that is natural will shine as she sings powerful messages of Oneness and Divinity, including Yúya Karrabúra (Fire is Burning), a teaching from the late poet, activist, and Ndjebbana woman Alice Pearl Daiguma Eather (may her spirit rest in peace). This unique sonic exploration of life’s largest themes promises to be deeply moving, introspective and musically beautiful.
Hannah’s singing and storytelling will thread together songs from the album and elements of improvisation with her 6-piece band in this one-off performance also featuring dancer Em Stockwell and psychedelic visuals by local artist brothers, Man & Wah.
“IRTYU is the Ancient Egyptian word for blue; the colour of the heavens, representing divinity in ancient times. For me, it also means ‘I really, truly, yearn unconditionally’ (an acronym of my own creation). As I constantly adjust, blur out and re-adjust to the chaos of the world around me, finding a way to work within its many warped systems whilst simultaneously standing outside them to observe and comment on the madness; and to create artful activity which brings people peace and beauty; I return to this truth. I really, truly, yearn unconditionally. IRTYU is the name of my next studio release and my show for Brisbane Festival will be the debut performance of this work in full.” - Hannah Macklin
