The undeniable highlight of the Ballroom calendar.
The annual Alexander Ball is back in its sixth year to reignite the Ballroom scene in Magandjin as part of Brisbane Festival. The iconic competition is once again curated by Ella Ganza, a Samoan-Māori trans woman of colour and Mother to the trailblazing House of Alexander. Ballroom was started in Harlem, NYC, in the 1970s by trans women of colour, and the culture and passion of the scene have found their way to Australian shores. The event showcases diverse 'walkers' from across Australia and internationally, competing to win the Grand Prize in one of multiple categories. The ball serves as a platform for self-expression, resilience, and cultural pride, forming a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community.

House of Alexander
House of Alexander is Meanjin’s trailblazing ballroom house founded in 2019 by Ella Ganza (Mother of the house of Alexander and ballroom daughter to the Icon Father Javier Ninja) together with Father Joshua Taliani. Born in the vibrant streets of Harlem, New York, ‘vouging’ or ‘vogue’ is a highly stylised form of dance created by black and Latinx LGBTQ+ communities out of oppression. Today, ballroom is more than just a competition but rather a way of life and an act of survival for the marginalised voices in our community. The House of Alexander brings ballroom to the thriving Meanjin scene with the intention to empower and reclaim the autonomies of our people, ultimately celebrating bodies of all shapes and sizes and all identities within the gender spectrum.
